Cub Scout Pack 162 - Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at cspack3162@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Cub Scout Pack 162 meets in the scout hut we share with BSA Troop 120. The hut is located on Golf Drive in Seneca, which is off of Keowee School Road, just next to Keowee Elementary School.

We typically hold Den or Pack meetings every other Sunday during the school calendar year. We also schedule an outing or service project outside of those regular meetings once a month.

We welcome all scouts, boys or girls, in the area of Seneca, Walhalla, Salem or the surrounding area. We are a very inclusive pack, and welcome any scout wanting to have fun, and learn about Scouting. Cub Scouts welcomes all races, religions, physical abilities, and family structures.

We organize and participate in a variety of outings and service projects throughout the year. Some examples from past years are:

  • Camping
  • Pinewood Derby
  • Planetarium Visit
  • Duke Energy, World of Energy
  • Geocaching
  • Fire Department Visit
  • Various Service Projects
  • Hiking
  • Summer Camp
  • Scouting For Food

We also host guest speakers, workshops, and other events to provide opportunities for learning and growth.

The BSA (Boy Scouts of America) Registration fee including insurance is $105 a year per scout. BSA also charges a $25 New Scout (one time) fee when registering. Optionally, your scout could pay an additional $15 a year for a subscription to Scout Life magazine. So, the minimum joining cost for a new scout (never in Cub Scouts before) is $130 for the first year, and then $105 per year ongoing.

Our pack does not ask for dues on top of this. We participate in a fund raiser every fall to raise the funds needed to support our pack.

Additionally, you will need to purchase a uniform. You can get a uniform new from the Scout Shop, or find them gently used. We would also recommend every scout have their own handbook. You may find other scouts that have a used handbook from a previous year and would be willing to trade.

Some outings we plan may have an additional cost to attend. Outings such as camping at the Boy Scout camp (Camp Old Indian) will have an additional registration cost. Some outing we may divide the cost of food between the attendees.

The mission of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.  The Aims of Scouting are: Character, Citizenship, Personal Fitness, and Leadership

The Methods of Cub Scouts are:

  • Living the Ideals - Reciting and practicing the Scout Oath, the Scout Law, the Cub Scout motto, and the Cub Scout sign, handshake, and salute
  • Belonging to a Den -  A group of six to eight children who are in the same grade is the place where Cub Scouting starts. In the den, Cub Scouts develop new skills and interests, they practice sportsmanship and good citizenship, and they learn to do their best, not just for themselves but for the den as well.
  • Advancement -  Recognition is important to everyone. The advancement plan provides fun for the Scouts, gives them a sense of personal achievement as they earn badges, and strengthens family understanding as adult family members and their den leader work with them on advancement projects.
  • Family Involvement -  Whether a Cub Scout lives with two parents or one, a foster family, or other relatives, their family is an important part of Cub Scouting. Parents and adult family members provide leadership and support for Cub Scouting and help ensure that Scouts have a good experience in the program.
  • Activities -  Cub Scouts participate in a huge array of activities, including games, projects, skits, stunts, songs, outdoor activities, trips, and service projects. Besides being fun, these activities offer opportunities for growth, achievement, and family involvement.
  • Serving the Neighborhood -  Cub Scouting focuses on the home and neighborhood. It helps Scouts strengthen connections to their local communities, which in turn supports their growth and development.
  • Uniform -  Cub Scout uniforms serve a dual purpose, demonstrating that a Scout is part of a team and showing individual achievement (Scouts wear the badges they’ve earned). Wearing the uniform to meetings and activities also encourages a neat appearance,  and good behavior.

The Scout Oath:  On my honor, I will do my best To do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; To help other people at all times; To keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.

The Scout Law:  A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent

The Cub Scout Motto: Do Your Best!
